Building WA’s Newest Team Building Attraction at Crown Perth

So how do you create an immersive amazing race team building program inside a luxury entertainment complex? Kind of makes you come back to the first principals questions what is the best amazing race experience in Western Australia? In 2020 it was The CBD Challenge, in 2023 it was Pathfinders: Optus Stadium, in 2025 it is Game of Strengths at Crown Perth. Part of the design journey saw us attending conferences in the USA and touring similar programs there right through to completely original design. Here are elements of our 1.5 year story.

Highlighting Crown Perth as a Teambuilding Venue

Crown Perth is a beautiful venue and lots of team building activities happen there daily however none are set up or designed into the build environment. Our goal was to highlight the unique history of the complex, from the entrepreneurial Dallas Dempster in the 1980’s right through to the complexity of the intricate, high quality tiling of the pool at Crown Towers in more recent times.

The Amazing Race meets The 1% Club

We wanted to make the game non linear (ie multiple paths, rewarding strategy) and tricky. Making it the correct level of complexity is hard because each team is different but we feel this is on the edge of possible whilst still being fun. Ultimately we want around 75% of teams to get the final challenge and only 5% of teams to get anywhere near running out of things to do in the challenge. This takes lots of testing groups and we track their progress every minute through the game. We feel where we are at now it will be a really well rounded team building experience.

Immersive experience story telling

We worked with a USA based immersive experiences script writer/storytelling expert (who works with Disney, Universal, Nintendo and DreamWorks bringing their characters to life in real life forms at theme parks and experiential marketing campaigns). This really helped bring clarity to the ‘Game of Strengths’ part or the ‘your team has been dealt in’ storyline. This process provided really good hindsight that this element had been missing from some of our earlier team building experiences we launched in 2019/2020 so there is huge opportunity to repurpose some different products in new locations, stories and environments.

Incorporating a behavioural leadership model

Creating a fun game which is disguised as a learning experience means mapping each of strength based leadership themes into a set of interactive challenges that encourage collaboration, problem solving, and creativity. The aim was to transform our interpretation of our personal strengths into tangible actions that could be seen, felt, and celebrated in real time. From there, we tested different mechanics from fast paced physical tasks to reflective problem solving activities until we found the right balance of competition and learning.

Complex problem solving

One of the puzzles took 3 months to build with constant testing from our staff, our friends and sometimes family member. Involving 3 dimensions of challenge as far as spatial, logic and arithmetic the real breakthrough in the process came from a USA based escape room designer who added another element to the existing puzzle making it a really engaging game.

Making it AI Proof!

So many concepts we had were brilliant but when tested, we found that they could be solved by AI in 10 seconds, taking away any collaboration opportunities for team based fun. This extra challenge meant we had to innovate and be prepared to throw away an idea at the earliest stage (the hardest bit is being excited about a new element of the game then writing it off straight away). We are all getting so sick of the amount of content or garbage being written by AI so we wanted to make the game a bit of a fun escape where you can’t just AI your way out of it.

Beautiful design

Well I guess that is a bit subjective but we worked with an elite Sydney based graphics designer who had done a lot of work with Rockpool in the past. The idea was to capture the defining features of Crown Perth subtly inside the game. The Guardian Lions, pool, palm trees and cocktails show the locations luxury as well as quality. Being the best team building provider means you have to dig into this level of detail for a one off experience that the client will have. Many clients won’t even notice but that is the idea – so quality, so immersive it just all weaves in.

Fun with Purpose

Fun with purpose is our tagline so fun with a genuine learning experience had to be in the centre of the design process. Making it a non-physical or physically inclusive was also core, people are looking for fun but we’re past the time of ropes courses and the likes these days (as much as we actually love this sort of adventure experiential program, it’s just not where our clients want to be in 2025!).
